  • A Navajo cowboy straddles a fence before saddling his horse during the annual Keith J. Boyd Memorial Rodeo in Lower Greaswood, Arizona. The Navajo have a long tradition of rodeo and ranching. They began herding in the seventeenth century, soon after the Spanish introduced horses, cattle and sheep into the Southwest. By the1920s, the Navajo were gathering to race horses rodeo-style, often circling the wagons to form an arena. In 1958, the All-Indian Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association was founded by Dean Jackson.

  • At the Dilkon Buckaroo Days Rodeo, a young bull rider wears a "You'll always remember the ride" sticker on the back of his vest. In the heart of the Navajo Nation, cowboys sport the standard uniform of rodeo riders everywhere: Western hats, blue jeans and boots. But the hundreds of spectators in the stands are a cross section of Navajo people. As the announcer narrates the action, he switches effortlessly between English and rapid Navajo.

  • Bull riders line up in the arena as they are introduced during the Dilkon Buckaroo Days Rodeo in Arizona. Each competitor randomly draws the name of the bull that they will ride. Perhaps because it is so risky, bull riding is a favorite with audiences. The rider must hold on for eight seconds, with added points for steering the bull on a straight course and maintaining proper posture.
